The world’s largest drone-based geological survey project has recently been completed in Russia. Geoscan sent their drone team to a silver mine «Prognoz» in Yakutia, adding a quantum optical magnetometer Geoshark to the team’s toolkit. Geoshark can be fixed to a drone to detect and map magnetic field anomalies, which can point in the direction of a new minefield. The length of the survey track tallied at 12,000 km. The team managed to put together a 3D map of the field, so now it’s much easier to understand where to drill.
Mining companies consider drone survey a promising technique. Plane surveys present a dilemma where flying too high doesn’t yield any usable data while flying too low poses safety risks. On-foot surveys often take too much time, like in the case of the «Prognoz» mine where the survey area is over 1,200 square kilometers #Geology #AeroNet #AutoNet #Drones #multicopter
